Elegance in the City: A Joffrey Summer Intensive Ballerina Photoshoot with Scarlett
There’s something truly magical about summer mornings in Chicago—the golden light streaming through city buildings, the calm hum before the bustle, and the sheer energy that comes from a city steeped in art and movement. This summer, I had the honor of capturing a rising star in the world of ballet—Scarlett, a 14-year-old ballerina visiting Chicago for the prestigious Joffrey Summer Intensive.
As a Professional Chicago dance photographer, I’ve photographed dancers of all levels and styles across this vibrant city. But there was something about Scarlett that stopped me in my tracks. Maybe it was her elegant lines, the ease with which she moved, or her poised focus. Maybe it was the infectious support and warmth of her mother, Brett, who made everything behind the scenes feel effortless. Whatever it was, this chicago summer intensive photoshoot quickly became one of my favorite experiences of the season.
Morning Light at The Bean: A Dance of Reflection
We began our session early in the morning at one of Chicago’s most iconic landmarks—Cloud Gate, better known as The Bean, in Millennium Park. Arriving early morning, the area was surprisingly peaceful. The stainless-steel sculpture, known for its mesmerizing reflections, offered a unique backdrop for Scarlett’s grace.
Scarlett arrived in a striking blue and red leotards, paired with a soft black wrap skirt. The early morning light washed over the skyline and bounced off The Bean’s mirrored surface, creating a warm, glowing ambiance around her.
From the moment she began her warm-up poses, I could tell: this young dancer was something special. Her lines were elegant and precise, yet filled with a sense of youthful joy. Every movement she made was an artful combination of strength and elegance. For someone so young, her discipline and grace stood out immediately. That’s the kind of passion you see from dancers who eat, sleep, and breathe their craft.
Capturing her poses against the surreal reflections of The Bean created moments that were both artistic and timeless. The contrast of classical ballet in such a modern, urban environment made each frame tell a story—not just of dance, but of dedication, dreams, and motion.
City Streets and Bold Lines at the Chicago Theatre
Our next stop was another symbol of Chicago’s vibrant arts scene: the Chicago Theatre, with its unmistakable Chicago Sign beaming bright orange and white against the skyline.
Here, Scarlett in a stunning blue leotard. The bold colors popped against the warm tones of the building's architecture and the vintage marquee above.
As we shot near the sign, passersby stopped in admiration, some even cheered her on after watching Scarlett float through a series of beautiful poses. It was one of those spontaneous moments that reminded me why chicago dance photography is so fulfilling—you never know what kind of magic the city and its artists will create together.
The theatre's nostalgic charm paired beautifully with Scarlett’s precise technique. In one of my favorite shots from the day, she leaned against the entrance to the subway, which framed the Chicago sign perfectly. It felt like a symbolic image—this young dancer, reaching for her dreams in a city known for its artistic heartbeat.
Working with Scarlett and Brett: A Seamless Experience
One of the things that made this shoot so enjoyable was how incredibly easy it was to work with both Scarlett and her mom, Brett. From the initial planning to the shoot day itself, Brett was supportive, organized, and completely invested in creating a positive and memorable experience for her daughter. She allowed space for creative direction while making sure Scarlett felt comfortable and confident.
Brett’s support clearly plays a vital role in Scarlett’s development—not just as a dancer, but as a grounded young artist. Watching the two of them work together with such mutual respect and affection was heartwarming. It shouldn't come as a surprise as Brett was a dancer herself. It reminded me of the essential role family plays in a dancer’s journey, especially in the early years when support systems matter most.
Final Thoughts
As a chicago dance photographer, I’m always honored to meet and work with dancers like Scarlett—talented, humble, and completely immersed in their passion. This shoot was not just about photographs; it was about witnessing a young artist step more deeply into her craft and create memories that will live far beyond the summer.
To Scarlett and Brett—thank you for trusting me to be part of your Chicago story. Your energy, elegance, and kindness made this one of my most memorable sessions to date.
